Five of us stayed at the Vital-Kurhotel Föhrenhof for the recent König Ludwig Lauf cross country ski marathon. The location is on the edge of this small village, a five minute walk to the grocery store, handful of restaurants, and a few small shops. ||||The hotel itself is a typical small Bavarian family-owned establishment. It clearly caters to the "Wellness" niche, see below. I'm guessing there are 25-30 rooms in all, with choices for either one or two people per room. Rooms are medium-sized, simple, and spotlessly clean. There was a small desk, television, and a nightstand on either side of the bed. Our rooms had balconies with chairs and terrific views, but we were there in the midst of a severe cold snap, so we didn't get to use it.||||The pool and spa area were standouts. The pool was warm and deep, and the the spa area downstairs quite luxurious. The sauna was excellent in temperature, design, and lighting. There was a small steam room, a "Tepidarium" with heated tile benches to relax on, and a bench with two areas for foot baths. Upstairs, there are rooms dedicated to mud baths and massage, though we didn't have an opportunity to partake in it this trip. The spa area and mud baths are organized on a roughly every other day basis.||||The breakfast was typical Bavarian fare, and was included in the room rate, €43 each for the double and €48 for the single rooms. The staff was friendly, and opened the spa for us on a Sunday when it was usually closed. It really helped to warm us up after a frigid time outdoors and loosened up the muscles after the race. They even fashioned a wax bench for us to tune up our skis in the basement exercise room. Their English was adequate, which is better than my German, so I can't complain there. ||||Overall, it was a very pleasant stay, and a good value (but cash only, so bring some extra Euro's). If you're OK with a 15 minute drive to Oberammergau, you could do a lot worse than Vital-Kurhotel Föhrenhof.
